Working of the Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

The main objective of the therapy is to forcefully instigate the body’s personal healing process by delivering oxygen to deep into the tissues. For the therapy, the patient needs to be enclosed in a pressurized environment.

In this environment (Chamber) he or she is breathing 100 percent oxygen. The amount of oxygen is significant the ambient air contains just 20 percent of the oxygen. Both complementary components, oxygen, and pressure need to work simultaneously in order to be effective.

The tissues are saturated via pure oxygen and then to push them deep down, the chamber pressure comes into action. It forces pure oxygen to enter deep into the tissues. So, what really happens is: the chamber forces the oxygen beyond the hemoglobin.

The oxygen enters into the interstitial fluid and the blood plasma. Thus, the oxygen is able to reach out to the tissues that are either damaged due to hypoxia or traumatized. Patients who are in the medical-grade chambers, generally dive about 7.5 pounds per square inch.

They are exposed to 1.5ATA for around 60 minutes at the desired pressure. However, in case your injuries are more serious, you would need to need to spend more time in the chamber. So, you will be inhaling pure oxygen under pressure for a longer period.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Treatment Chambers

Individual chambers are often referred to as the hard chambers. The hard chambers are further sub-divided into two categories. The first one is like an airplane’s cockpit. This type of chamber allows the patient to sit instead of lying down.

The second type is like a bed located inside a hard-acrylic bubble. The patient has to lie down in order to have the therapy. This can be troublesome especially for people who are cataphoric. They might be more comfortable in the sitting position.

Regardless of the type of chamber, it functions the same way. After the patient enters the chamber, it is locked and sealed. Once it is completely secured and the chamber reaches the desired pressure, the patient would have to put on a hood.

He or she will be breathing 100% oxygen via this particular hood for some specific time. In most cases, it is an hour or so. After 60 minutes, the chamber technician would bring back the chamber normobaric pressure.

Usually, it takes around one minute per square inch of the chamber to get back to the normal baric pressure. Likewise, on average it takes around 9 minutes for a patient to reach the PSI 9 and vice versa.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Treatment Time

The time and the duration of hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatment greatly depend upon the medical condition of the patient. It varies from patient to patient. For instance, for milder cases, it is possible to use soft hyperbaric chambers.

However, for severe cases, you would have to go with something stronger such as the 1.5ATA hard type hyperbaric chamber. On average, a hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatment compromises of 40 sessions in total.

Each session is of an hour and you repeat it for 5 to 6 days a week. When you take the treatment regularly, it leads to new capillaries to grow in tissue. Previously, these capillaries were oxygen-starved, thus they did not grow.

To take the treatment, you first need medical clearance. The doctor would provide you the clearance. The same treatment is not applied to all patients. On the contrary, it is customized as per the individual’s condition.
